English Language Teaching Unit (ELTU)

English language as a second laguage was taught under the Centre for Multi-Disciplinary Studies which was established at the UVPA in 2006. However, from the year 2009 onwards, the English language courses began to be conducted by the three respective faculties. In 2010, the English Language Teaching Unit (ELTU) was established taking into consideration the growing need to learn English amongst UVPA undergraduates. The current syllabi, which will be revised with the consultation of subject experts, will consist of a number of Levels which are to be designed in such a way that the three faculties will have a common core programme consisting of English for General Purposes, English for Academic Purposes (EAP) and English for Professional Purposes (EPP). The newly established ELTU aims to teach all four language skills; listening, speaking, reading, and writing using a student- centered teaching approach. Students belonging to all four academic years are taught the language. It has been made a compulsory credit course for the first and second year students and for those in the third and fourth years, it is an optional subject. If an undergraduate manages to successfully complete all four levels, she/he will be awarded a certificate at the end of the final year by the examination division of the University. The ELTU is presently engaged in the task of designing new courses aiming to explore and implement new, interesting and innovative ways of teaching English as a second language.
