eduroam Wi-Fi for Staff and Students


How do I connect to the Wi-Fi?


To connect:

  • Go to Wi-Fi settings and select 'eduroam'
  • When prompted, for staff enter your University username followed by @vpa.ac.lk. For example: This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. and for students University Student ID Number followed by @student.vpa.ac.lk. For example: <student id number>@student.vpa.ac.lk
  • Enter your University password
  • Check and verify Certificate details with Certificate Security Information given below if prompted
You should only need to authenticate once, after that you'll automatically connect to eduroam when it is available. You will need to repeat these steps if you change your password.

Connecting your devices


Additional instructions for setting up your mobile device with eduroam.

  • Microsoft Windows

    • Click on the network icon on the bottom right of the desktop.
    • Tap on eduroam
    • Staff Username: This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.
    • Student Username: <student id number>@student.vpa.ac.lk
    • Password: Your password
    Click OK
    When Prompted with Verify Certificate, click Show Certificate details link.
    Verify the Certificate Details.
    Click Connect.

    Changed your University password?

    If you have changed your University password since setting up the wireless network you may need to forget the network and re-connect.
  • Apple OS X

    • Go to System Preferences -> WiFi
    • Click on drop down menu, select eduroam and enter the following details:
    • Mode: Automatic
    • Staff Username: This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.
    • Student Username: <student id number>@student.vpa.ac.lk
    • Password: Your password
    Click Join
    When Prompted with Verify Certificate Popup Window, click Show Certificate Button.
    Verify the Certificate Details.
    Click Continue.

    Latest software

    If you have a problem connecting your Mac to eduroam, you may need to upgrade to the latest software.

    Changed your University password?

    If you have changed your University password since setting up the wireless network you may need to forget the network and re-connect.
  • Linux

    • Click on Network icon Desktop
    • Then Click on "Select Network"
    • Now Tap eduroam and click "Connect" and enter the following details:
    • Wi-Fi: WPA and WPA2 Enterprise
    • Authentication: Tunneled
    • Anonymous Identity: Leave blank or Type "Anonymous"
    • CA Certificate: None
    • Tick "No CA certificate is required" check box
    • Inner Authentication: MSCHAPv2
    • Staff Username: This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.
    • Student Username: <student id number>@student.vpa.ac.lk
    • Password: Your password
    Now Click "Connect"

    Changed your University password?

    If you have changed your University password since setting up the wireless network you may need to forget the network and re-connect.
  • Android

    Connecting your Android device to eduroam. To connect:
    • Select Settings
    • Select WiFi
    • Select 'eduroam' from the list of available wireless networks.
    • Enter the following settings. Note that not all of these settings may be required for your device.
    • SSID: eduroam
    • Encryption: 802.1X, WPA2-Enterprise
    • Staff Username or Identity: This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.
    • Student Username or Identity: <student id number>@student.vpa.ac.lk
    • Outer Identity: Blank or use This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.
    • Outer Identity: Blank or use This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.
    • Password: Your University password
    • User authentication settings: EAP/PEAP MSCHAPv2
    • Domain: Leave blank
    • Proxy: should be set to Auto
  • Apple iOS

    • Go to Settings -> WiFi
    • Tap eduroam and enter the following details:
    • Staff Username: This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.
    • Student Username: <student id number>@student.vpa.ac.lk
    • Password: Your password
    Tap More Details and verify the Certificate details.
    Tap on "Trust" at the top right.

    Changed your University password?

    If you have changed your University password since setting up the wireless network you may need to forget the network and re-connect.
    • Open Settings
    • Touch Wi-Fi
    • Touch the arrow on the right hand side of eduroam (on iOS7+ this appears as a blue 'i' in a circle) and touch 'Forget this network'
    • Touch Forget from the dialog box
    • Go back to the Wi-Fi menu and follow the connection instructions above.
  • Windows Phone

    Connecting your Windows Phone 8 or Windows Mobile 10 device to eduroam. There isn't an automatic way to connect a Windows phone to eduroam however connection is simple.
    • Go to Settings -> WiFi
    • Tap eduroam and enter the following details:
    • Connect using: Your username and password
    • Staff Username: This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.
    • Student Username: <student id number>@student.vpa.ac.lk
    • Password: Your password
    • Server Certificate Validation: None
    • EAP Method: PEAP MS-CHAP v2

    Changed your University password?

    If you have changed your University password since setting up the wireless network you may need to forget the network and re-connect.
  • Other devices

    You can connect other devices to the eduroam wireless service if it supports 802.1X or WPA2-Enterprise encryption. Most devices will need the following information at minimum:
    • Select the wireless network eduroam from the list of available networks
    • Enter your University username in the format This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. and your password
    • Save and connect

    Generic settings

    Not all of these settings may be required for your device, but you may need some of them to connect successfully.
    • SSID: eduroam
    • Encryption: 802.1X, WPA2-Enterprise
    • Staff Username or Identity: This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.
    • Student Username or Identity: <student id number>@student.vpa.ac.lk
    • Outer Identity: Blank or use This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.
    • Outer Identity: Blank or use This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.
    • Password: Your University password
    • User authentication settings: EAP/PEAP MSCHAPv2
    • Domain: Leave blank
    • Proxy: should be set to Auto
  • Certificate Security Information

    You may experience a security or certificate warning when first connecting to eduroam at The University of the Visual and Performing Arts . To ensure your safety, check that the certificate you are presented with matches the following information:
    • Server common name (CN): irs.vpa.ac.lk
    • Issued by: VPA Certificate Authority
    • Valid from: 09/10/2017
    • Valid to: 09/10/2027
    You can also install the certificate yourself before connection by downloading and double clicking it to install.

Where else can I access eduroam?

If you are visiting VPA in Albert Crescent, Horton Place or Kohuwala Premises and your home institution has enabled eduroam authentication (IdP), you can connect to eduroam from any VPA wireless access locations.

For non-VPA community members: when connecting to eduroam, authentication is provided by your home institution. Your home institution's IT helpdesk is best equipped to provide support and assistance.
