Profile:

Dr. Chinthaka Prageeth Meddegoda, lecturer on North Indian music (vocal) at the University of Visual and Performing Arts (UVPA) in Colombo since 2010, teaching theory and practice of Hindustani vocal music, supervising research projects of students, is also director of the Research Committee of UVPA. He is interested in popular and traditional music of various Asian cultures as well as in general issues of human society, philosophy and cultural studies. As a member of ICTM since 2013, secretary of the ICTM Study Group Musical Instruments, editorial board member of SIMP (book series of the ICTM Study Group Musical Instruments), the Asian-European Music Research Journal, and of “Sangeeth”, the Research Journal published by the Aesthetic Education Unit, Ministry of Education, Sri Lanka, he tries to improve research structures throughout the country and beyond. He obtained a PhD Degree with thesis at the UPM Graduate School and the Music Department under supervision of Prof. Dr. Gisa Jähnichen during the period from 2012 to 2015. He was additionally trained as an audiovisual archivist, a book editor, and a conference organizer. Since then, he published several academic papers in this field and presented research outcomes on international conferences in many places of the world. During his studies in India, he learned Hindustani music (classical, semi classical, and folk) under several Gurus from Lucknow and Banaras, among them Dr. K K Kapur, Dr. S S Awasti, Prof. Ritwik Sanyal, Prof. Sarayu Sonni, Dr. Kavimandan, Pandit Channulal Mishra, Pandit Surendra Mohan
Mishra, and Dr. Wanamala Parwatkar.
