Introduction to the Department of Information Technology

(DITE), Faculty of Dance and Drama, University of the Visual and Performing Arts

The Department of Information Technology was established in the faculty of Dance and Drama of the University of the Visual and Performing Arts under the Government Gazette (Extraordinary) No.2293/63 of 19th August 2022. The department offers new paths to meet the objectives and strategies of the University. The main concern of the department is to minimize the un-employability rate of the graduates by enriching them with job-oriented IT skills. By producing ICT-proficient arts graduates, we believe that we can address the burning issue of the lack of employability of art graduates, which produce art graduates with more ICT skills. In addition, the introduction of IT modules, will improve the quality of learning and it will also prepare students to face the competitive demands of the job market. The Department of Information Technology will render its services to all three undergraduate faculties of the UVPA: the Faculty of Dance and Drama, Faculty of Visual Arts and Faculty of Music.

The Faculty of Dance and Drama, where the Department of Information Technology was established, is enriched with leading academics, artists and practitioners in the Sri Lankan creative industry. Currently, the Faculty comprises nine departments of study. The University can benefit from the established Department of Information Technology in its effort to deal with the increasing computing needs of the university which is an identified urgent need at the moment. One of the main objectives of the Department of Information Technology is to produce graduates who are knowledgeable and competent in IT skills in the local and global context. This department will work closely with the faculties so as to encourage cross-faculty teaching. Furthermore, the department expects to initialize research that integrates IT and Visual and Performing arts streams. Accordingly, the Department of Information Technology will positively contribute to meeting the objectives and strategies of the University of the Visual and Performing Arts. This department also aligns its activities with the government’s vision of a digital transformation in Sri Lanka.
