Prof. Janaka Kottegoda

Dr. Janaka Kottegoda is the first Senior Lecturer in the Department of History of theory of Dance and Drama at the Faculty of Dance and Drama. He has been contributing for nearly 25 years as an academic researcher, book author, video choreographer, project planner and academic administrator, and as well as a traditional dancer.

He graduated from the University of Visual and Performing Arts in 2006 with a bachelor’s degree with honors in low country dance. He received his Masters in Performing Arts from the Postgraduate Unit of the University of the Visual and Performing Arts in 2013, as the first to receive the Master of Performing Arts degree from this University.

He holds a PhD in Cultural Studies from the University of Sri Jayewardenepura since 2019, and he is the youngest Senior Lecturer at the University of the Visual and Performing arts with a PhD. He is well-versed in the fields of dance as well as television and film media and communication. He has completed a number of vocational courses in the field of films at the Academy of Films (New Delhi), Youth Center, University of Colombo, University of Kelaniya, Institute of Television Training, and is an expert in Audio Visual Media Technology.

He has provided leadership to a number of areas as an active administrator of the academic staff. Significant among them are; as the Unit Head of the Research and Media Unit of the University of the Visual and Performing Arts for three years from 2010-2013, as the Chief Administrator and Course Coordinator of the Piliyandala Campus of the Center for Open and Distance Studies for four years from 2011-2015, as the Principal Instructor of Diploma in Television and Cinema for a period of one year from 2012-2013 and as Head of the Department of Dance Theater History and Theory for nearly 2 1/2 years from 2014-2016 .

He has been contributing in the various professional fields over more than 13 years; as the Acting Director of the Center for Open and Distance Studies, a Student Councilor, the Chief Dormitory Administrator, the Student Patron, an Active Coordinator of the University of Occupational Projects (IRQUE, HETC, AHEAD) of the Faculty of Dance and Drama Studies in the Year 2019, etc. As an academic researcher, he has published five research books on traditional dance and folklore, television media and communication, edited four books, involved in the publication of 10 journals and more than 15 research papers while in service at the University of the Visual and Performing Arts. He has to his credit many awards received both locally and internationally. He has been a member of the State Dance and Ballet Advisory Council since 2020 and a member of the Teledrama Jury of the National Television Corporation. He has also been a member of the All Ceylon Evaluation Board for the Youth Awards and School Dance and Ballet Competition for the last 10 years and has been a Supervisor for the subject of Dance of the GCE Advanced Level Examination for the last three years.
