Profile: 

I graduated from the Institute of Aesthetic Studies, University of Kelaniya in 1987. I was appointed as a visiting Instructor in the Department of Dance of the Institute of Aesthetic Studies for the Academic years of 1987/88, 1988/89, 1989/90, 1990/91, 1991/92“ 1992$93‘ On the basis of my academic qualifications and considering the teaching experience I had during the period of 1987 to 1993, I was appointed as an Assistant Lecturer (Probationary) in the Department of Dance in the Institute of Aesthetic Studies of the University of Kelaniya with effect from 1st July 1993. After obtaining my Postgraduate Degree of Master of Philosophy in 1998, I was promoted to the post of Senior Lecturer – Grade II in the Department of Dance of the Institute of Aesthetic Studies with effect from 01st December 1998. Subsequently, I was promoted to Senior Lecturer – Grade I with effect from 1st December 2004. The Institute of Aesthetic Studies obtained full university status and it was named as University of the Visual and Performing Arts in the year 2005. Accordingly, I continued my service as a Senior Lecturer in the Department of Sabaragamu Dance in the Faculty of Dance and Drama of the University of the Visual and Performing Arts. During the period of 1998 to 2008, due to double batch intakes to the University, I had a teaching load that exceeded the norm by more than 25%. During this period, I rendered my service in Saturdays as well in addition to the five-day work week.   

I have been working as the Head of the Department of Sabaragamu Dance during two periods, from 15th August 2008 to 14th August 2011 and, 18th December 2017 to 17th December 2020 respectively. In addition, I was appointed twice to cover the duties of the Dean of the Faculty of Dance and Drama, University of the Visual and Performing Arts, from 08th June 2018 to 18th June 2018 and it was later extended up to 28th June 2018 since the Dean was on medical leave.  

At the beginning of my career, I enthusiastically associated with my senior colleague, late Mr. Wikramasinghe Bandara, firstly to develop the subject Area of Sabaragamu Dance and then the teaching and learning process. University of the Visual and Performing Arts (UVPA) established in 2005 initially comprised three faculties, namely Faculty of Dance & Drama, Faculty of Music and Faculty of Visual Arts. Subsequently, Faculty of Graduate Studies was added as a fourth faculty. The Faculty of Dance & Drama consisted of seven departments including the Department of Sabaragamu Dance. As a senior lecturer, I contributed in several ways to develop the Department of Sabaragamu Dance. Under my supervision, facts finding field visits and workshops were executed to enhance the subject knowledge of Sabaragamu dance. Apart from that, I enthusiastically associated with the faculty of Dance and Drama and made my contribution in many avenues to develop the teaching and learning process of the faculty. In addition, I made several contributions participating in Staff Development Programs conducted by the UVPA.

Development of New Material for Existing Degree Courses:

• In my capacity as Head of the Department, I organized and conducted a workshop on Sabaragamu Dance Natyamaya Pelapali that included Devol Godabeseema, Hatha Yakkama, Amba Vidamana, Vadi Sanniya, etc., pertaining to the sub traditions of Ratnapura, Balangoda and Kalawana on 28th May 2009 employing traditional artists, within the premises of UVPA. The staff members and the undergraduate students participated in this program. I made arrangements, on the one hand to explore the full content of facts on the performances of traditional artists and the other to prepare audio and video materials extracted from this workshop to use for future teaching and learning purposes. These materials are used in the existing degree courses for the students. 
• In 2009, I organized and conducted two Thematic Editing Workshops (Stage I held on 17.09.2009 and stage II held on 09.10. 2009) on “Sabaragamu Wannam” within the premises of UVPA. The staff members and some traditional artists participated in discussing and editing the Sabaragamu Wannam. The results of the findings were added to the existing degree courses.
• Preparation and distribution of Teaching and Learning Material for undergraduate students; 
  • Pawade nateema (පාවාඬේ නැටීම) under the 4th year main subject of Sabaragamuwa Dance (DSAD 43047). The paper was submitted to the 54th Faculty Board and it was approved. The paper was later submitted to the 56th meeting of the Senate of UVPA held on 11th August 2010 and it was accepted   by the Senate.

The below-mentioned four support learning papers were submitted to the 162nd Faculty Board for approval and they were approved by the Faculty Board.

• Development of the Syllabus contents for External Degree / Diploma programs conducted by the Centre for Open & Distance Learning of the University of The Visual and Performing Arts.,
  • As a coordinator in Sabaragamu dance for CODL, I participated and made my contribution for the  Bellow mentioned workshops held for designing of open & distance learning material and continuous assessment mechanism, organized by the Centre for Open & Distance Learning;  
  • Workshop on Developing a Continuous Assessment Mechanism for External Degree Program funded by the HETC Project of the World Bank held on 08th February 2013 within the Premises of the University of the Visual & Performing Arts.
  • HETC-UDG-EDP Training workshop held on 16th December 2014 within the Premises of the University of the Visual & Performing Arts.  
• In my capacity as a coordinator, I developed a one-year diploma course in sabaragamu dance for Open & Distance Learning Education. The report prepared in this regard was submitted to the 60th  Meeting of the Senate of the UVPA, held on 28th December 2010. It was approved by the Senate.

  • I participated to Sri palee Campus Syllabai Development Workshop held on 19th September 2001 at the College House of the University of Colombo and made my contribution to develop new curriculum for Mass Media and Performing Arts.  
  • National Institute of Education, As a resource person, I participated & made my contribution in two workshops (1st held on 06.03.2010 and the 2nd held on 29.07.2014) within the premises of National Institute of Education in Maharagama to edit the Advanced Level Syllabus in Performing Arts.

• Strengthening research capacity
  • I have been enthusiastically working to develop a research culture among final year undergraduate students and postgraduate students as well. I used to disseminate my research experience & knowledge, gained through my Ph.D. research. In the event, I made useful contribution particularly to develop the research capability of the postgraduate students who come to receive supervisory advice from me.
  • participated and made my contribution for the bellow mentioned workshops on Institutional development & conducting research organized by the University of the Visual & Performing Arts.
    • Workshop on “Strategic Retreat” (Institutional development & conducting research), held on 1st April 2010 at Hotel Janaki, Colombo 05, organized by the University of the Visual & Performing Arts. 
    • Workshop on Research Methodology in order to increase the engagement and development of research held on 01st September 2016 at the Auditorium of the Faculty of Dance & Drama organized by the Staff Development Centre of the UVPA.

 Transitioning to Dual Delivery of Lessons: 

In this context, firstly I participated in the workshop on Effective Use of Learning Management System (LMS) held on 06th December 2016 at the auditorium of the Faculty of Dance & Drama organized by the Staff Development Centre of the UVPA.  

I have contributed to the preparation and use of audio and video material for dual delivery of lessons. During the COVID-19 pandemic period, I used the LMS to deliver lectures to students. In the event, I developed audio and video material to be used in these lectures. A report prepared in this regard was submitted to the 152nd meeting of the Faculty Board of the Faculty of Dance & Drama held on 15th July 2020, and it was accepted by the Faculty Board.  

During the COVID-19 pandemic period, I delivered the lectures through Zoom and disseminated the lecture notes and video material via LMS, enabling the students to understand how to perform the below-mentioned items; 

• • For Sabaragamu Dance 4th year students, under the subject of Sabaragamu Dance (DSAD 43016); items such as Pawade Nateema, Rama Mareema, Pandam Pada Nateema, Marusanniya Nateema, and Dewol Godabasma of Balangoda culture. 
  • For Sabaragamu Dance 4th year students, under the subject of Study of Shanthikarma Pela Pali (DSAD 43082); items such as Atth Bandanaya and Asura Yakkama.
