Department of Musicology
The Department of Musicology at the University of the Visual and Performing Arts, Colombo, is one of the leading academic centres for the study of music in Sri Lanka. Established under the Faculty of Music, the Department traces its roots to the Department of Comparative Music, founded in 2005 alongside the University itself. Over the years, it has grown into a vibrant and dynamic academic community, bringing together scholarship, performance, and research under one roof.
The Department offers the Honours Degree Programme in Performing Arts (Music), a rigorous 120-credit undergraduate programme that takes students on a journey from foundational music studies through to advanced research and professional practice. Our curriculum blends the depth of traditional musicological scholarship with the demands of the modern world — encompassing ethnomusicology, music technology, music therapy, cultural studies, and performance arts.
We are committed to nurturing the next generation of musicians, researchers, educators, and creative professionals who will carry forward Sri Lanka’s rich musical heritage while engaging confidently with the global academic and artistic community.
